On Pending Expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)

This will be the first of a timely new series on acute social and spiritual issues. We’re calling these Presentation and Prayer. A roster of specialized EFC staff will present an issue for information and instruction followed by Q and A and prayer. We believe informed strategic and united prayer can influence the social and spiritual issues of our nation.
In March 2024, people with mental illness alone will become eligible for medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in Canada. The original date was March 2023 but it was extended. Along with many others who have spoken out, the EFC is gravely concerned about the impact of this change on vulnerable Canadians. As an organization that speaks regularly in the public square, the EFC has consistently communicated deep disagreement with this expansion, and concern over how it will impact people with mental health concerns and those who love them.
This pending expansion of MAiD (euthanasia) will greatly increase the risk that Canadians will end their lives via MAiD because they feel they have no other options. Recent EFC research also shows some people who become destitute might choose MAiD rather than live without enough money.
