MAid for Mental Illness

1 min read

The EFC and many others are very concerned that a law allowing euthanasia on the basis of mental illness will take effect on March 17, 2027 – unless a bill is passed to stop it. We’ve just written to the Health and Justice Ministers to ask them to stop MAiD for mental illness.

There’s positive news – a bill has been introduced in the House of Commons that would stop this expansion. BC MP Tamara Jansen has introduced Bill C-218 to repeal MAiD for mental illness.

But private members’ bills like this one need broad public support to pass.

You can help make this happen!

A quick phone call to your MP’s office to ask for support for Bill C-218 can make a difference. It can be as easy as sharing your thoughts with the person who answers the phone or leaving a voicemail to say things like:

Thank you for serving our community. I live in the riding and I’m calling because I’m really concerned that the law allowing MAiD for people with mental illness alone is set to take effect in March 2027. I think this must be stopped. We need to support Canadians to live and make sure they have access to treatment, not end their lives through MAiD. I’d like my MP to support Bill C-218, which would stop MAiD for mental illness alone. Please tell me the MP’s position on this.

For greater impact, tell a personal story. Mental illness touches all of us and our loved ones in different ways. Contact your MP in more than one way, e.g. write and call. Ask to meet or mention it to your MP at a summer event.

The EFC has a one-page description of what’s happening and what you can do and a handout you can give to your MP when you meet or write. See more EFC resources on Bill C-218 here.

Find your MP’s contact information at OurCommons.ca/Members/en.

This is a simple, concrete step we can take to help roll back the expansion of euthanasia in Canada. Let’s work together to support the good legislation that’s been proposed.

Please continue to pray with us for our country, for our leaders, and for good laws that protect people in their vulnerable moments.
