Leaders and Colleagues in Ministry:
We love the church. We want to reach the lost. The majority model of church will not reach everyone. Therefore, we need a plurality of models to see the family of God fruitfully expand.
From 2016-2018 I participated on a disciple-making movement team without being taught the underlying biblical and ministry principles. Those two years gave me time to change habits and mindsets that kept me from understanding what “multiplication” and “movement” really meant. Then I took the training and came to understand how deeply Christ-like the approach was. From 2018-2020, we took that ministry model to over 10 Turkish provinces and met with hundreds of people. Our team had the joy of baptizing a few dozen, many of whom (and several who hadn’t been baptized yet when we left) have gone on to baptize others.
Since January 2021, I have listened and watched with joy as leaders (like you!) have been captured by the idea of making disciples in small groups who make disciples who make disciples. We call the approach DMM, CPM, and/or microchurch. But for thought leaders and everyday believers alike, the habits of attractional, platform-based ministry are so ingrained that we struggle to take the first steps to multiply disciples even after being introduced to new concepts. On top of that, surveys of local church pastors indicate that only about 10% of our congregations are actively involved in the Great Commission.
So, the team at Eston College, in partnership with other DMM practitioners in Canada and around the world, has designed a 2-year, part-time disciple-making experience. We plan to recreate the transformative power of putting people on small mission teams and deploying them while they are being taught to engage the communities where they live. Students will never have to set foot on our campus. They will get world-class coaching. At the end of two years, those who successfully create the program will be ready to catalyze disciple-making groups anywhere. But they don’t have to wait two years. After the first month, students will have a new way of looking at and joining in with God’s action in our world.
I want to share the bigger picture with you as leaders and partners. Please consider joining me virtually for the Leaders Briefing on June 26. This is an informational session for all of you who are considering enrolling, referring students, and sending local mission teams from your churches and ministries.
Let’s overcome the pockets of spiritual sterility that have kept our communities from planting and bearing multiplying fruit.
For detailed information about the program prior to the discussion, please review this short file.
